Not just a house of worship or a classical monument, Riau also has a temple that is evidence of the historical development of religion diprovinsi Riau, and is estimated to have been around since the golden age of the kingdom of Sriwijaya and visited by many tourists. Yes, her name is Muara Takus temple.



Attractions

Barelang temple is one of the few Buddhist temples, and the temple was proved that once the existence of Buddhism in the region several centuries ago. Although archaeologists have not been able to determine exactly when the temple was founded, but they agreed that the temple was founded in the heyday of the kingdom of Sriwijaya VII-XII century AD.

Stupa is the main characteristic of Buddhist sacred building. Architecture stupa in the Muara Takus temple is very unique with a wheel and head ornaments lion. The shape of the stupa has similarities with the Buddhist stupas in Myanmar, Vietnam, Sri Lanka or the ancient stupa in India during the period of Asoka. The temple complex is surrounded by a wall measuring 74 x 74 meters. In fact, the temple complex outside the walled area of land measuring 1.5 x 1.5 kilometers. 
The temple building is made of clay and part of a fence made ​​of white stone. Muara Takus addition, several other temples also stands are old temple, Temple Young, Mahligai Stupa and Palangka. According to some sources, the stone used to build the temple consists of basic materials such as sandstone, river rock and brick. The bricks are from Pongkai village, a village located on the downstream side of the temple complex. In addition, there is also a mound is estimated as burning human bones. Based on the results of archaeological research in 1994, Muara Takus temple consists of fences, Old Temple, Temple youngest, Mahligai Temple, Temple Palangka, Building I, Building II, III Building, Building IV, VII Building, and the ancient embankment. Origins of the Muara Takus Temple

The name of this temple itself is derived from the name of a creek that empties into the Batang Kampar Kanan. Meaning of "Muara(English=
estuary)" which is a place where creeks flow into the sea terminate. While "Takus" is derived from the Chinese language is "Ta" means big, "Ku" means old, and "Se" means temple. So, Muara Takus temple means magnificent old temple building at the mouth of the river. 

That said, local people believe that the Muara Takus temple was built on the request of a daughter who comes from India. The daughter was taken by Datuk Tiga Ahli to Muara Takus after sailing to India. In the community, the princess known as Princess Reno Wulan or Princess Induk Dunia(English=Mother World). Muara Takus temple was established as a condition of his willingness to be brought into the country. The daughter of a similar request made temple to temple where her parents are. So that's the Muara Takus temple resemblance to Asoka Temple in India. Another phenomenon that is witnessed by the local community that is the white elephant led a group of elephants at night during a full moon. Elephants came to the temple and do the prostration position as the man of worship to the lord. Then a group of elephants totaling approximately 30 individuals that surround the temple Barelang. When connected to a Buddhist mythology, the elephant is one of the reincarnation of Buddha, and also as a symbol and vehicle of a king. This phenomenon indicates the existence of life in Riau Buddhist civilization in the past.
